The significance of the starter motor can be understood when you turn the key in your car’s start, the engine turns over and then eccentricity. Though, getting it to crank is really much more involved than you might think. Working principle of Bosch starter motor

When you turn the ignition on, the starter motor involves and turns the engine over letting it suck in air. On the engine, a flywheel, with a ring gear joined around the edge, is fixed to the end of the crankshaft. On the starter, the trap is designed to fit into the channels of the ring gear. When you turn the ignition switch, the electromagnet within the body engages & pushes out a rod to which the pinion is joined. The pinion meets the flywheel and the starter motor starts rotating. This turns the engine over, sucking in air (as well as fuel). As the engine turns over, the starter motor unties, and the electromagnet stops.


Types of Starter Motor

Manual: A manual Starter Motor is the plainest starter. It is fundamentally a switch with overload protection. This starter style is only used on lower horsepower motors and only with motors that are not actually limited when starting. A motor that energies a flywheel, for example, would not use a manual starter, but a pump could use one.


Magnetic: This starter style uses a contactor or large transmitter to turn the motor on or off. An engineer would regulate the contactor via a programmable logic controller (PLC) or some other kind of automation controller. The magnetic style is like the manual style, excluding a small voltage signal that can control the contactor.


Reversing: A reversing-style Starter Motor uses two contactors in a similar to change the phases so that the motor will run in reverse. Again, a small voltage signal from a control system will activate the motor’s clockwise or counterclockwise track.


Things to consider before buying the Starter Motor

When selecting a Starter Motor, look at the use. Is the motor continually running at a fixed speed? Will there be numerous starts and stops of the motor? Do you need to vary the speed or have the motor run at a reduced speed?


If the motor is moving a conveyor belt, you wouldn’t need to start the motor at full speed, as the products on the belt may slip and could be scratched. Naturally, offload conveyor systems would use a VFD-style starter. This way, the startup speed can be measured, and the belt can be effortlessly stopped.


Efficiency also plays a factor. Large cooling fans do not need a reduced speed starter, but they have the advantage of starting at a reduced speed, as the motor will not draw as much current as starting under full load.
